~Past Times~
Each memory tells a story about the little girl who grew up with Nigerian parents in DC in that tiny apartment. Where my parents, esp my father loved to take photos with the disposables.
“Did you know it was Christmas?”
Christmas is my parents favorite time of the year. It was also the time where my mother loved to dress my sister and I up and take tons of photos in our living room. At that time, I didn’t really like to take photos due to my shyness, but looking back now, these memories are always golden. Most of the “dress up” photos were always taken before heading to church.
The scatterer
This is my mother’s favorite photo of me. When I was younger, she noticed that things in our apartment would go missing or be moved. Thinking it was my father, she caught me red-handed one day when I opened the kitchen cupboard for a can of soup. She said that I love to touch everything in sight; her papers, cups, pens, cassette tapes…anything in reach. What commonly went missing? The TV remote.
“It’s her birth day.”
This was on my 6th birthday back in 1st grade. Could you believe I was the tallest person in class at that time? You see that vest I am wearing? It was my favorite one to wear back during those times. It has the Grinch grinning on top. The movie is an all-time classic for me. One year, they showed the movie repeatedly on a channel all day and I left the TV on to let it run. I would pass by it occasionally to sing along to the songs.
